Hotel Find: Casa Degli Atellani Milan

WAKE UP IN LEONARDO DA VINCIʼS 15TH CENTURY VINEYARD.

Situated metres away from Leonardo da Vinciʼs Last Supper, the Casa Degli Atellani invites guests into their 15th-century building whose grounds play host to a museum, the Atellani Apartment private residencies and La Vigna di Leonardo, a luscious vineyard planted and treasured by Leonardo da Vinci.

In the late 1400s, da Vinci was gifted a hectare of land by the then Duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza, to thank him for his immense contribution to the city. The land was directly across from the Santa Maria delle Grazie church, where he was painting The Last Supper for three years. As Leonardo, a passionate winemaker, painted his monumental work, he tended to the land where he would plant his favourite grape variety, the Candia Aromatica Malvasia.

The Casa degli Atellani withstood numerous tribulations over the years that followed, and it was only in 1920 that renowned Milanese architect Piero Portaluppi restored the building to its new glory. Portaluppi uncovered stunning frescoes from the Renaissance during his restorative works, and also conveyed the modern architectural attitudes in Milan at the time.

Now tended to by Piero Portaluppiʼs grandchildren, who ensure the safe upkeep of the property, Casa Degli Attelani operates to its fullest capacity and consists of private residencies, a museum, cafe and Leonardoʼs vineyard. However, the private residencies are still somewhat of a hidden secret waiting to be uncovered.

Intent on sharing the magic with those that also appreciate art, architecture and the beauty of nature, the family invite guests to experience the Atellani Apartments – six beautifully-furnished apartments. Available for short or long stays, the apartments which are extremely well priced, each have their own charm and hold Portaluppiʼs signature designs at every corner. A family of 6 can also be hosted together in the ”˜Leonardoʼ apartment which faces onto the Santa Maria delle Grazie church, where guests wake up to the church bells tolling rhythmically. Complete solitude can be found in the ʼSforzaʼ garden apartment completely surrounded by the Casa della Atellani gardens, right next to the vineyard. The apartment sleeps 2, and is luxuriously spacious at 85sqm.

Apartments are self-catered, but breakfast is available at the La Vigna di Leonardo cafe downstairs. Next door one of Milanʼs best sushi restaurants, Tsukiji, can be easily booked for dinner by Atellani Apartment guests and locals alike. Massimo, the long-term porter for the building, ensures guests feel equally at home and secure, whilst Giuditta and Julia who oversee guest stays are available for any needed requirements or recommendations on what to do in the city.

Family run, the experience of staying at the Casa del Atellani is authentic. Guests come for comfort and leave with new knowledge of Milanʼs wondrous history, a new perspective on design and most importantly a ”˜Taste Atellanoʼ, a bottle of Candia Aromatica Malvasia wine!
