NYC Restaurant Find: La Tarte Flambee

A tiny restaurant in the Upper East Side specialising in tarte flambée a dish that started out life in Alsace (a French town bordering Germany) and was traditionally eaten by working-class farmers. You could say the tarte flambée is France’s answer to pizza only the flatbread is rolled out so thinly it has barely any weight.

These tarte flambées are so deliciously light and crispy you and your tablemates will burn through them very quickly. Just make sure somewhere in the ordering frenzy you get the Forestiere (gruyere cheese, with bacon and sautéed wild mushrooms) and the Biquette (gruyere and goat cheese with bacon and a touch of honey).

Best Bit: Watching your Calva dessert tarte being flambéed right at your table.
