Restaurant Find: Ruffian Wine Bar NYC

Wine bars in New York City’s East Village are a dime a dozen, though at Ruffian Wine Bar, there’s more than meets the eye. Simple and nondescript from the outside, warm and cozy on the inside – this 400 square foot space operates as a bar and restaurant, with dishes being prepared at the counter right in front of your eyes.

The interior of Ruffian Wine Bar remixes classic design elements with the eclectic without being pretentious; sleek black and white light fixtures hang above wooden bar stools, illuminating the multicolored chevron wall panelling.

This honest design sensibility is reflected in the menu; a daily serving of Southern French cuisine with a distinctive twist of East Asian flavors and spices. Think warm fingerling potatoes with chickpeas and muhammara (a Middle Eastern hot pepper dip) or lentil salad with spiced yogurt, curry leaves and sev. Drop by for a dish or an after-work aperitif. While you survey the extensive wine list, make a special request for the cheese soufflé and balsamic toast – you won’t regret it.
