NYC Culture Find: Nuyorican Poets Café

The Nuyorican Poets Café is a legendary Lower East Side cultural landmark. Since the early 70’s the café has offered a stage for multicultural, independent artists to deliver poetry, spoken-word and Afro-Caribbean musical performance to the city’s ethnically diverse, culturally expressive inhabitants.

Originally this cultural gem had been set up as a platform for Puerto Rican New Yorkers or Nuyoricans, to discuss the harsh realities of identity, culture and the politics of the time. Nowadays, poets will wax lyrical with a hip-hop inflected, theatrically delivered performance at the café’s famous late night poetry slams, which are judged by a spirited, vocal audience.
