Luxury Hotel Resort Find: Amangani Jackson Hole

(This story by Jenny Nguyen-Barron first appeared in ForbesLife)

Jackson, WY ”“ In a town best known for its dramatic mountainscapes that afford seasoned skiers one of the most challenging double black diamond slopes in America, there’s also a beacon of calm, quietness and tranquility amongst all that rugged, unforgiving nature. Amangani, a remote cliff-top luxury resort located a staggering seven thousand feet above sea level with sweeping views of the Tetons and Snake River Range, is the perfect up-scale base for skiing, or even for taking year-round respite amongst the natural beauty of Grand Teton National Park and nearby Yellowstone National Park.

DESIGN

The design of this stunning three-storey hotel, comprised entirely of suites, takes inspiration from Amangani’s impressive outdoor scenery with the use of natural materials like Oklahoma sandstone and Pacific redwood. The result is an atmosphere of Western sophistication that joins seamlessly with Eastern minimalism.

Wander throughout the common areas and one can’t help but notice the tasteful combination of just enough chic wooden furniture, fireplaces dotted throughout, luxurious animal skins adorning the walls and sparingly used Native-American objects. But the pièce de résistance is the sandstone terrace, which overlooks a dramatic view to the mountain ranges and a stunning 115-foot heated pool and hot tub that invites you in for a year-round dip (no matter how low the Wyoming temperatures drop).

ACCOMMODATION

The luxurious appointments don’t stop at the common areas. Each of Amangani’s suites offers guests a remote controlled fireplace, an oversized private balcony that affords a panoramic view to the valley and a king-sized bed, which can replicate the feeling of sleeping on cloud nine. But it’s the unbelievably spacious bathroom and walk-in closet area that will impress most guests. The shoulder-deep sunken bath and separate slate shower room are both set up against a floor to ceiling window that looks out to that picturesque view. Top it off with a redwood vanity (double, for that matter) and you have the bathroom that dreams are made of.

ACTIVITIES

It may be difficult to muster up the motivation to leave (and understandably so), but if you do, Amangani offers a host of activities such as skiing, horseback riding, mountain biking, fly-fishing, hiking and even a BMW test-drive around Yellowstone National Park. One stand out activity that should not be missed is the wildlife tour led by Jarred Paul, Amangani’s resident wildlife expert. One half-day trip with Jared and you’ll leave not only having spotted local Elk, Bison and perhaps a Bear but you’ll also resolve to turn over a new leaf, move out of the city, into the wild and maybe even start hunting wild game for food just like your new hero Jared does. And for those of slightly fainter heart, Amangani’s world-class spa can also act as an equally worthy option.
