Concept Store Find: Maison Assouline London

Maison Assouline London is a rare find, a jewel box in which to appreciate art, beauty and fine living ”“not surprising when you consider the pedigree from which Assouline Publishing was born.

In 1994 Martine and Prosper Assouline decided to dedicate a book to La Colombe d’Or, the legendary hotel in Saint Paul de Vence, attracting artists and thinkers since its café-bar beginning in 1920. Thousands more big and beautiful titles followed from the publishing house, famed for lifting the concept of a coffee table book to a completely new level.

Twenty years later, the deepest Assouline experience was opened in Piccadilly. The grand building, originally designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1922, was formerly a banking hall. It is now a temple for bibliophiles and home to Assouline Interiors, a selection of luxury library furniture and décor, including candles scented of leather, paper and wood. The warm and gracious store staff are led by knowledgeable sales manager Emilia Bairamova, providing gentle guidance should you require any.

Browse upstairs their Cabinet de Curiosités and, on the way, enjoy the majestic view from the balcony, where you’ll also find a small bespoke bindery for personalised notebooks. Alternatively, sink into a quiet corner of the Swans Bar to enjoy an espresso or a late afternoon cocktail and enjoy the refined refuge from the tourist bustle outside. One essential tip – remember to look up!
